Meredith's Book Club - 2017 Wrap up post

Meredith’s book club is my “regular” book club. It’s what most people think about when they think of books clubs. A group of people who know each other in various ways get together. Pairs of us are friends in different settings, outside of book club and we all basically like each other so we might talk about doing non-book related things together too, sometimes. Sometimes we actually do it. Each person hosts at their house and picks the book for that time. Sometimes, everyone reads the book, most of the time at least two people don’t read it.

We’ve got six members now, having lost one person this year to whatever else she would prefer to be doing. It happens. She was one of the women who almost always read the book, though. But she also came out of her face with some annoying ass shit, so pros and cons. Bye.

For 2016, I did two posts: one for books I read and one for books I didn’t read [linked]. This time I’m just going to put them all in this one post. Because lazy.

What I didn’t read:
The Likeness by Tana French- Jen picked this book WHICH IS A SEQUEL. Obviously, I couldn’t read that on principle. But, I had also DNF’s the first book in the series due to sheer boredom and disinterest. I was also unable to go to the meeting for this book, but it seemed like it was generally met with “meh.”

It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover – I specifically remember checking this out from the library and I liked another book by the same author (Ugly Love, 3.5 stars). So, it must have been during a time that just didn’t work out for reading.
What I did read:
The Witches of New York by Amy McKay – This was my pick before I realized it’s a billion pages, which is never a good choice for a regular book club. The commitment to reading is too varied. But three people stuck it out, including me and the woman who is determined to maintain her “I’ve read every book” streak.

The Mothers by Brit Bennett – Now. This book has gotten a lot of love. But I thought it was kind of boring and the main characters has very few redeeming qualities. But at least two people in book club “LOVED IT.” So what the hell do I know?

Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris – This book also surprised me. Mostly because you think it’s going to end one way, and it does, but a little something special happens and you’re like. "Hmmph. Nice!" It was actually an excellent book club pick. [Link to my mini-review]

The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto by Mitch Albom – I really loved this book, and I was prepared to hate it. Everyone who read it at least liked it.

  1. Haha, I dug The Mothers. I go to book club even when I don't read the book just because it's fun to get together.
