1. In
Charlotte’s Web, Wilbur’s first brush with death is avoided by friend,
Charlotte A. Cavatica. What’s been a close call that you have read about?
I
just finished the Heroes of Olympus books and those kids have close calls all
over the place! I really like when books have one or two near- death moments,
but then it starts to feel a little forced.
2. Charlotte’s
Web is a story about friendship. What’s been your favorite book about
friendship?
One of my favorites has been
I am Princess X by Cherie Priest and All Our Pretty Songs by Sarah McCarry.
3. Wilbur
learns how to look at the bigger picture and not think of himself all the time.
Are there any characters you love because of their great transformations?
This
is a hard question. I can’t believe I asked this! I think my favorite transformation that comes
to mind is Nathanial from Jonathan Stroud’s Bartimeus Trilogy. It’s kind of
like if Draco Malfoy became a decent guy. Which he doesn’t.
4. Templeton
is a jerk from beginning to end. Who’s been your favorite character to love to
hate? Are they considered a villain?
I
prefer for my villains to be villains most of the time. I love to hate Severus
Snape because everyone else loves to think he’s justified in his assholery and
I don’t think that he is. I also love to hate more obvious choices, like the
cult leader in The Girls.
5. Life
on the farm is all about sacrifice. What’s your favorite book about a society
where people have to sacrifice something for the “greater good?”
When
I think of this question I think of dystopian books where families give up one
of their children (E.g., Unwind, Hunger Games) or everyone has to die at a
certain age (e.g., Matched). I would say my favorite one this year
has been The Scorpion Rules by Erin Bow, where families in power give up their heirs
to help avoid war.
6. It’s possible that Fern
can hear animals talking to her, and it’s possible that she is hearing voices
(or just using her imagination) and that the animals actually aren’t talking to
her. What’s a good book about people who may be seeing or hearing things that
other people don’t?
Charlotte's Web is my favorite. I also
love this aspect of Mary Poppins where she basically makes the kids sound crazy
in front of their parents. I always enjoy books like Splintered where there are
many things that could be but then some event throws the whole thing into
question. I don't tend to like this in movies or on TV, though.
7. Charlotte’s Web has many
different versions of plays and movies. What book would you want turned into a
movie? A play? A musical? Pick one or be a star and tell me all three!
I think that the Night Circus
would actually be better as a movie, if they did it right.
8. The ending to Charlotte’s
Web is supposed to inspire hope along with some sadness. What’s a book you’d
recommend for hopeful tears?
I’m gonna make another plug
for A List of Cages, about a boy who was adopted into a loving home a child in foster care who was not. The Enchanted is also a
beautiful book full of horrific things that throws hope around like a light seasoning.
9.
Charlotte’s Web is a children’s classic. What’s your favorite book from
childhood? Have you read it again as an adult?
The Borrowers were books I
always came back to. I’ve kinda scared to read them again as an adult in case
they are terrible. But I have re-read several children’s classics. Most hold
up, at least a little.
10. This is my first book tag
post. What did you think?
