What I've Been Reading, June

It was a pretty good reading month! I joined two new book clubs recently, through two separate local libraries. I went to writing group which I haven't gone to in over a year. I also started a summer tap dance class.

Obviously, I'm not in a show right now. It's amazing how much time it takes to be involved in a show! Rehearsals for yet another remount for Charlotte's Web start Sunday.

Anyhoodles: The Highlights of the Month are....

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part- Time Indian - now, Sherman Alexie has been accused of assault and did not say he was not- guilty. So, support him with a grain of salt and open eyes, yall. But I really liked this book about a young Native American boy who is growing up on a reservation who decides that he will not go gently into that good night! Or something, like that.

Speak No Evil by Uzodinma Iweala - I'm so angry at this author for roping me into a touching coming out story and then slamming my heart into a meat grinder with a twist. Fucking excellent bullshit. #WNDB

Speak of Me as I Am by Sonia Balasco: A 5 star read, yall!! What? I know! It's the story of two teens who are grieving a loss and start to work on their school play, Othello. It's an excellent look at finding people- support and artistic outlets for pain. There's a sassy gay sidekick character who is simultaneously side- eye and hug worthy. #WNDB

American Hippo by Sarah Gailey is a duology including River of Teeth and Taste of Marrow - speculative fiction about an old west (kinda) if feral hippos occupied the waters of the Mississippi.

The Gentleman's Guide and Vice and Virtue by Mackenzie Lee: I'm glad I finally got around to this one. The main character is a tool... perhaps he is better described as a lovable rake. He steals an unknown box and kicks off an adventure while he is supposed to be on a grand tour of Europe. His father is hoping that the tour will teach him something and help him settle his gay ass down. But, alas. He is traveling with his free Black friend and his gender-role nonconforming sister. So, it's got all the check boxes checked. Including pirates! #WNDB
